Being planted on the sofa for the majority of time right now thanks to my sports injury means discovering shows I missed when they were first popular and am currently bingeing, distracting me from pain and entertaining my bored brain!
Below are my top 7.
Dead To Me
A dark, compelling series of accidental murders leading to strong impenetrable female friendships in the vein of Thelma and Louise with star turns from Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini. With themes of death and grief but with punchy light relief (it’s no surprise Will Ferrell is an Exec Producer), you will gobble the three seasons up in days. The show sadly ended due to Applegate’s MS diagnosis.
Bridgerton
The phenomenon that is Bridgerton is a modern adaptation of Julia Quinn’s regency romance novels with high stakes and even higher production values. This is steamy storytelling at its finest.
You
Gossip girl fans unite in this dark and twisted series following Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg, a magnetic and handsome bookseller whose allure hides criminal tendencies. You want to look away but can’t!
The Queen’s Gambit
Scott Frank and Allan Scott’s breathtaking adaptation of Walter Tevis’ novel set in the 50s and starring Anya Taylor-Joy as chess whizz Beth Harmon, reveals her inner life of addiction as she rises in the ranks, playing and beating the men at their own game!
One Day
The chemistry between the characters Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall) and Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) is definitely fire emoji! Their first ‘cute meet’ is July 15, 1988 — their last night of uni — before going on their separate ways but it marks the start of an enduring romance that spans decades. As captivating as it is heartwrenching, it’s rare to find a series that does a book justice but this certainly does that. Do not miss it!
Virgin River
A comfort blanket of a whopping 7 series following Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) as she moves to the remote town of Virgin River and finds love, loss and a community of eccentric characters who help and hinder her life there. The scenery alone is stunning to watch and the complex relationships are handled with care.
Have you seen any of these? Which series should I watch next?
