In 1905, 11-year-old Frank Epperson accidentally invented the Popsicle in San Francisco when he left a cup of flavored soda with a stirring stick on the porch overnight, and it froze.

Years later, he debuted the treat at a fireman’s ball in 1922, then began selling it at an amusement park in 1923. He patented it in 1924 under the name “Epsicle,” later renamed “Popsicle.
