How to Play Roll a Christmas Tree

1. Give each player a Christmas tree game sheet and set out a supply of M&M’s in the five listed colors.
2. Players take turns rolling one die.
3. Each number corresponds to a color on the Christmas tree:
- 1 = Red
- 2 = Blue
- 3 = Orange
- 4 = Green
- 5 = Yellow
- 6 = Any Color (Your Choice!)
Making 6 a “wild” roll keeps things fun and festive. Players can choose any color they still need to keep the game moving! If you’re using M&M’s and want to stick with the classic set, you can always make 6 the brown ornament instead.
4. After rolling, players place one matching candy ornament on their tree.
5. The first player to decorate their entire tree wins!
That’s it! Simple, quick, and full of giggles. Especially if someone keeps rolling the same number over and over!
How long does this game take? Each game takes about 10 minutes. Just long enough to keep kids entertained without losing their attention.
In our house, the real challenge was keeping enough M&M’s on the table. My kids (and husband) kept “accidentally” taste-testing their ornaments between turns!
We played a few rounds with M&M’s (the speed round version described below was our favorite!). Then we switched to markers and hung our finished trees on the fridge.
Pro Tip: Doing this for a big gathering or holiday party? Print several and set up a Roll-a-Christmas Tree station at a table.
Super Fun Game Variations to Try

The basic game can be spiced up with these festive twists. Try one of these:
- Speed Round: Everyone rolls at the same time to see who finishes decorating first.
- Use it as a Number-matching Game: Fill in the circles with numbers and have the participants count the dots on the die and mark down the corresponding number as they roll.
- Make it an Action Edition: Add silly Christmas-themed actions to each number. For example:
Roll a 1? Do your best Santa impression.
Roll a 2? Act out an item from your Christmas wish list this year. See if the others can guess what it is. No words allowed!
Roll a 3? Shout your hilarious elf name!
Roll a 4? Sing a line from a holiday song.
Roll a 5? Ask one interesting Christmas Trivia Question.
Roll a 6? Shout “Merry Christmas!” in your silliest voice.
- Group Game: Play in teams and race to see which group can decorate their tree first.
