Supplies You Need For This Punch Board Game
All you need to play is:
- Foam board
- Glue gun and glue sticks
- Solo cups
- Prizes (I like to do a mix of gift cards, money, conversation hearts, and other small things). Gag gifts can be funny too.
- Pink tissue paper (you could also do multiple colors!)
- Scissors
- Rubber bands
Note: To make sure everyone gets a turn, you’ll want to have as many (or more) cups than people at your gathering.
To Set Up The Heart Punch Cup Game
Before you can play, you’ll have to make the punch board.
1. First, lay out your cups on the foam board to figure out your design and the number of cups you need. I thought the design below looked most like a heart. But you could also do an XO, arrow, or flower if you’d rather not do a heart.

Again, you’ll want to use enough cups for everyone at the party, so if you’re doing a classroom Valentine’s Day party, make sure you have enough cups for the whole class. (Read to the end for tips if your group is too big for your board). You can also keep all of your prizes the same to make it equal.
2. Once you’ve figured out your design, fill all of your cups with gift cards, money, candy, or gag gifts (more ideas below!). Make sure you keep it random, and no one sees where you put them.

Bonus: Hide a red pom pom in 1-3 of the cups for an extra prize at the end of the game!
3. Next, you need to cover your cups so that players have something to punch through. I cut my sheets of pink tissue paper in half, but it will depend on how big your tissue paper is in the package. (Cut them all at once to make it faster!)
Your tissue paper squares don’t need to be perfect or huge. They just need to be able to cover the cups.
Note: My tissue paper was thin, so I ended up doing two layers to make sure the players couldn’t see through the cups to the prizes inside.
4. Place the piece of tissue paper on top of your cup.

Then, wrap a rubber band around the tissue paper and cup to secure the paper to the cup.
Repeat this process with all of your tissue paper until all of your cups are covered.

5. Finally, hot glue the bottom of each cup to its spot and place them hot glue side down on the board. Keep going until they’re all glued down, looking like the design you want.

Pro Tip: I’ve used this foam board multiple times. It’s easy to reuse the cups, rubber bands, and board for other punch cup games, like this Rudolph one.
Objective of the Heartbreaker Punch Game

What Makes This Game So Fun?
It’s the suspense and mystery of not knowing what’s in each cup. Plus, it’s surprisingly satisfying to punch your way through something! (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you definitely need to play this game!)
Fun fact: The punch game is inspired by The Price Is Right, where contestants punched through paper circles to reveal hidden prizes.

Common Questions and Answers
What if the players don’t like their prizes?
You get to make the rules for this game! If they don’t like their prize and want to switch with someone else who doesn’t like their prize, they can. Or you can decide beforehand that all players keep what they get.
What if you have more people than you have space on the board?
If you have more players than space on your foam board, prepare extra pre-filled cups ahead of time and keep them off to the side. As players punch out cups, simply replace the empty ones with the ready-to-go cups. It’s a perfect solution for large groups!
What else could you do for a Valentines punch cup game board?
The sky is the limit! Do a candy theme, lips, Cupid, or stick with the simple heart (it’s the easiest). Whatever you do, your guests are going to LOVE the suspense and mystery that this game brings!
