Usually cynical about New Year’s Resolutions but ever the optimist, I duly commit goals to paper, my preferred medium, each year yet not this one just passed. Unwell with stomach flu, I missed my NYE ‘deadline’, and yet despite this and most likely due to this, something extraordinary happened and I simply took action, without planning nor fanfare aka telling anyone, in January.
I began (and have almost finished) a respected online BBC course, researched my new project in great depth and continue to, one I’d been mulling over the year before but stalled, and set to work. Daily work.
A superstition I’m sticking to, however, is not verbalising or writing the specifics of any new creative projects (where I can contain myself), bar a scattering of friends and family members, for accountability more than anything. N0t (for once) for encouragement or validation in retaliation to my daily battle with Imposter Syndrome, I intend to drown out with diligent, all consuming work and a splattering of delusion.
‘The universe meets you where you’re at’ is a quote I no doubt came across on Pinterest but don’t let that put you off *wink emoji because something alchemical undoubtedly occurs when you start creating: you become inspired and work or vice versa, you rework, edit and amend, develop your work further and with the help of selective exposure, where life experience, news, movies, books etc feed into your ideas which in turn are bolstered, grow and blossom, even when it might feel otherwise. Because when you commit to self imposed deadlines and devote time to a process you know will stretch and reward you, whatever the eventual outcome, that’s all we creatives can hope for. That we’re taking ourselves and our creative plans seriously.
So whether you’ve penned or typed out resolutions this/last year (you know what I mean) or not, simply begin, and most importantly keep going.
