Why You’ll Love This Roll a Rainbow Game

It’s low-prep and easy to set up, making it perfect for busy parents and teachers.

It’s great for:

Kids stay engaged while practicing color recognition, counting, fine motor skills, and turn-taking. All while having fun!

And let’s be honest… everyone loves a game that might involve sneaking a few pieces of candy while they play.

Supplies You Need

To get started, gather the following:

What if you don’t want to use candy to play?

This game can be played many different ways! You can substitute:

  • pom-poms
  • dot stickers or any colored stickers you have on hand
  • dot markers
  • Mini buttons or beads
  • pieces of paper
  • Play-Doh rolled into tiny balls
  • or simply color in the dots with crayons, colored pencils, or markers!

However you choose to play, adding color to your rainbow makes it brighter and more fun. If you use markers or stickers, hang the finished rainbows on the fridge, wall, or bulletin board to add some springtime cheer.

How to Play Roll a Rainbow

Here are the basics for how to play the game, then keep reading to the bottom to add in clever twists!

1. Give each player a Roll A Rainbow game sheet and the candies or markers you will be using to play.

2. Players take turns rolling one die.

3. Each number corresponds to a color on the rainbow:

  • 1 = Red
  • 2 = Orange
  • 3 = Yellow
  • 4 = Green
  • 5 = Blue
  • 6 = Purple

Tip for Using Candy: Classic M&M’s don’t include purple, and Skittles don’t include blue. To keep the game simple, treat blue and purple as interchangeable. If a player rolls either color, they can use whichever color their candy includes. You can also use a marker or crayon to fill in the missing color. Or make one of those colors a wild and let players choose any color they still need.

4. After rolling, players fill in one color on their rainbow.

5. The first player to color their entire rainbow wins!

That’s it! Simple, quick, and full of giggles. Especially if someone keeps rolling the same number over and over!

How long does this game take? Each game takes about 10 minutes. Just long enough to keep kids entertained without losing their attention.

In our house, we love these roll-a-dice games. The real challenge is keeping the candy on the table! My kids (and husband) keep “accidentally” taste-testing their colors between turns!

We played a few rounds with skittles (the speed round version described below is our favorite!). Then we colored in our rainbows with markers and hung them on the fridge.

Pro Tip: Setting this up as a classroom learning center? Print several copies and create a Roll-A-Rainbow station using small play dough balls for each color. Students can roll the die, add a matching play dough ball to their rainbow, and build fine motor skills as they play.
