Web Series 2026: OTT platforms have been dominating the entertainment sphere in India since the past six years now. While cinema and television were a staple diet of the Indian audience, things changed post the COVID-19 lockdown. As the desi audience got exposed to content from across the world, they started demanding for better shows.
Indian Government Ban On Ullu And Other OTT Platforms
Indian TV shows have faced flak for their regressive storylines and never-ending plots and episodes. Indian films have also attracted attention on over dependence on star power and lack of intriguing storytelling. Things have changed in the digital space as filmmakers are busy exploring new themes and genres. The likes of Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar, ZEE5 and SonyLIV have changed the way we consume content- we are now getting crispy episodes with limited duration and engaging plots.
Last year, The Family Man season 3, Special OPS 2, Panchayat season 4, Criminal Justice season 4 created ripples upon their release on streaming platforms. While these web series continued to enthrall the audience, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting banned certain OTT platforms for promoting vulgarity and obscene content.
ULLU app and other OTT platforms were banned as the Central government took stringent action to curb obscenity in the digital sphere.
“The Ministry of Broadcasting and Information decided to ban 20 OTT platforms for objectionable and obscene content. OTT platforms like Ullu received flak for promoting vulgarity in society with obscene scenes in their web series. After the ban, Ullu app has removed all its content from its official website and deleted all the posts from Instagram. The makers have remained underground amid the legal restrictions following the ban,” a reliable industry source earlier told Filmibeat.
“The web series like Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, Happy Ending, Tu Dekh Meri Photo that have released online on Ullu and other such platforms have pulled from the website and app. A few of them are available on Dailymotion, but they will also be removed from the video-sharing platform. The web series featuring Natasha Rajeshwari, Malvika Tomar and other actresses that have not premiered yet will continue to remain unreleased,” the source further added.

Things will be clear when an official announcement is made. It has been difficult for certain OTT platforms, who had earlier greenlit shows before the ban was initiated.”
