The second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is coming, which means Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell are back (kinda) together, playing character Colonel Lee Shaw at two different ages.
The Apple TV series — which is part of Legendary’s Monsterverse — follows a secretive organization known as Monarch that monitors giant monsters, with season two unleashing Kong, Godzilla and mysterious new creature Titan X. The series is also the first time the father-son Russell duo have worked together, although they have yet to share the screen as they fight monsters in separate timelines.
Wyatt got candid about that pressure of finally teaming up with his famous dad at the Los Angeles premiere on Thursday, telling The Hollywood Reporter that this time around “followed the first season where you carry a bit of — I don’t want to say consternation, but there’s always a bit of consternation, because it feels weightier than if I was just doing a movie or show on my own, it just does. Because you want it to be great, you want it to be extra great, because we’re in it together and you only get a few opportunities to do that. It’s going to live on forever and you can’t change it once it’s out.”
He continued, “That’s the reality of it, so instead of it being pressure you just take it on as the reality of what we’re doing and then just make it as great you can.” Kurt responded, “That’s really true, I never really think about that but I know in the back of our heads that exists. When you’re going to do something together that [pressure] is going to be out there, it’s what we do, then you don’t want it to be anything other than as good as it can be. And we do keep striving for that.”
As for if they’ve discussed adding any other members of their famous family to the series, Kurt confirmed, “We laugh about it. I say I would give anything to see [Wyatt’s wife] Meredith’s reaction to Godzilla. I’d love to see what Goldie [Hawn] does with Kong; she’s a blonde so he might like her. Oliver [Hudson] should be in the show, there’s no question about it. And [son] Boston has actually helped me greatly with a lot of the mythology of what is going on with these monsters and probably what will continue to be part of the cannon of something that’s been around for a long time. His knowledge there is absolutely vast and was extremely helpful.”
The Russells are not the only ones bringing star power to the show either, as Anna Sawai returns, having experienced a career-changing shift with Shogun in between the first and second seasons.
“It’s so lovely because they’ve known me since I was just me, and then everything happened and they still treat me the same,” Sawai said of the Monarch team. “Going to the Emmys and going back to shooting it the day after, it just makes me feel grounded. I felt a sense of safety and just like relaxed energy around them.”
The Monarch universe is also expanding, with plans for multiple spinoffs and Wyatt starring in an untitled Lee Shaw prequel series. But Sawai says the cast is mostly in the dark on where the franchise is going next, teasing, “We don’t know anything. I only know that this is coming out Feb. 27 and after that I’m like, what’s happening?”
The second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters does indeed start streaming Feb. 27 on Apple TV.
