Today, Prime Video announced the launch of “Nippon Sangoku The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun”, a much-awaited anime series that is set in a divided near-future Japan. The series will premiere on April 5th, with new episodes released weekly in over 240 countries and territories. It will be available exclusively on Prime Video outside of Japan.
The story depicts the near future of Japan, where revolution arose from nuclear war, natural disasters, and corrupt governance, where civilization has collapsed. The nation has split into three, entering an era of warring states vying for supremacy. Aoteru Misumi, once a humble local government official, aims for the “reunification of Japan,” rising through the ranks with his vast knowledge and exceptional eloquence.
The legend of the man who would later be called a genius military strategist begins.
To heighten anticipation of the series launching exclusively on Prime Video, the main key art drawn by Studio Kafka and a new trailer has been released. In this key visual, the protagonist Aoteru Misumi is depicted standing with dignity. In the corrupt Three Kingdoms era, this key visual conveys hope for the future that he envisions.
The series is based on the manga by Ikka Matsuki, and the project brings acclaimed director Kazuaki Terasawa (The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2, Woke-Up-as-a-Girl Syndrome from “Tatsuki Fujimoto 17-26”) with a leading Animation studio, Studio Kafka.
“We are thrilled to bring Nippon Sangoku to Prime Video customers worldwide,” said Nicole Clemens, Vice President of International Originals, Amazon MGM Studios. “We aim to create a destination where a wider range of customers can enjoy high-quality anime content with distinctive storytelling that will captivate audiences globally.”
“This anime is set 100 years in the future in Japan, where civilization has been rolled back to the Meiji era through violent revolution. I hope audiences will enjoy this story where the future and past intersect in the same picture.” said Kazuaki Terasawa, Director. “The original manga Nippon Sangoku is largely inspired by the Three Kingdoms period in Chinese history. Among the books that chronicle the Three Kingdoms period, there are Records of the Three Kingdoms as the official history that records historical events, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a novel based on that history. If I consider the original manga as the ‘official history,’ then this anime is the ‘romance’-breathing new life into it through dynamic direction, vibrant and colorful art, and the powerful performances of the voice actors. I would be delighted if people could enjoy both versions.” said Ikka Matsuki, original manga artist.
