Neelira First Review: The upcoming war drama Neelira, featuring Naveen Chandra, Sananth, and Roopa Koduvayur in key roles, is scheduled to arrive in theatres on April 3. Directed by debutant Someetharan, the film is backed by Karthik Subbaraj and Rana Daggubati. Set against the backdrop of the Sri Lankan civil conflict, the film draws from lived experiences of the period.

Ahead of its theatrical release, film industry tracker Ramesh Bala shared his early impressions of the film on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), following a preview screening.

In a post shared on March 31, Ramesh Bala described Neelira as a “masterpiece,” assigning it a 5/5 rating. He noted that the film portrays the struggles of Eelam Tamils during the 1988 conflict in Northern Sri Lanka, focusing on the tensions between the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) and the LTTE. According to his post, the narrative unfolds over a single night, centring on a tense situation inside a Tamil household preparing for a wedding the following morning. Ramesh Bala characterised the film as both “thrilling” and “emotional.”

In a subsequent post on April 1, Ramesh Bala elaborated on various aspects of the film. He highlighted the performances of Naveen Chandra, Sananth, and Vidhu, while singling out Roopa Koduvayur for what he described as an “award-winning performance.” He also pointed to the film’s background score by composer K, its editing by Radha Sridhar, and the runtime of 90 minutes as notable elements. Ramesh Bala further commented on the direction, stating that debutant filmmaker Someetharan has handled a sensitive subject with finesse.

Neelira Plot, Crew, And Release Buzz

Neelira is set in a village in Northern Sri Lanka during the civil war era of the 1980s. The story revolves around a family attempting to conduct a wedding amid escalating tensions, only for unexpected developments to disrupt the occasion on the eve of the ceremony. The film explores how conflict intrudes into personal spaces and moments of significance.

The project features cinematography by Selvaratnam Pratheepan and sound design by Tapas Nayak. It is produced by Kaarthikeyan S and Karthik Subbaraj, with Rana Daggubati and Kalyan Subramanian attached as co-producers. The music is released under Sony Music India.

With its release just days away, Neelira has begun to draw attention through early reactions such as Ramesh Bala’s, though audience and critical responses will become clearer once the film reaches theatres on April 3.
