Backyard Play Ideas to Keep Kids Entertained Outside

Do you have a backyard that’s perfect for the kids to run around in, but they don’t seem to be excited to go outside to play? Well, it’s not just about having a space for them to play – it’s also about what they can do with it. An outdoor space that offers them something to look forward to can make all the difference in getting them off the screens and outside in the fresh air.

To turn your backyard into a fun spot for your munchkins, here are some ideas you can use.

Outdoor Trampolines

Kids love trampolines. Maybe it’s the feeling of weightlessness as they bounce into the air, or the thrill of trying to jump higher each time. Maybe it’s the freedom to move, twist and play in a way that feels both exciting and carefree. Whatever it is, kids just have a blast and never get tired of it.

More than just fun, trampolines also offer a way for kids to be active without feeling like they’re exercising. Unlike sports that might feel like a chore, bouncing on a trampoline is pure play in their eyes. Yet while they’re jumping, twisting and laughing, they’re also building strength, improving coordination and boosting their cardiovascular health – all while burning off energy in a fun and engaging way.

How do I choose an outdoor trampoline, you ask? Safety should be your top priority when purchasing a trampoline. Look for outdoor trampolines with safety enclosures or nets to prevent falls and padding over the springs and frames to reduce the risk of injury. Round trampolines are the most common for home use, offering a good balance of safety and bounce. Rectangular models provide a stronger bounce but require more space and are usually more expensive.

Remember, some trampolines are designed for younger kids, with a lower height and a gentler bounce. Others are for teens or even adults, with a more robust structure and stronger bounce. So make sure you check the manufacturer’s guidelines for maximum weight, recommended age range and any additional safety features that may be included.

To ensure the trampoline lasts longer, look for rust-resistant frames, UV-resistant jumping mats and warranties that cover at least a few years. Weather covers or anchor kits can also extend their life and keep them secure during storms.

Play Structure

A play structure is another way to keep your kids busy and active in the backyard. While climbing, sliding and swinging, your kids will have fun and also develop strength, coordination and confidence. Apart from physical growth, these kinds of activities also spark creativity and imaginative play. Whether they’re pretending to scale a mountain or zoom down a racing slide, kids can spend hours exploring.

Just be sure to choose an age-appropriate play structure to ensure your kids’ safety while they play. Structures designed for younger children typically have lower platforms, shorter slides, and safety features like guardrails or enclosed spaces. Older kids, on the other hand, might enjoy more complex setups with climbing walls, rope bridges, or taller slides that match their strength and coordination levels.

Tire Swing

If a play structure isn’t a viable option for your backyard, a tire swing can be a great alternative. It doesn’t take a lot of space, is relatively easy to install and still provides hours of fun and physical activity for kids. A tire swing can be hung from a sturdy tree branch or a secure frame, making it a flexible option for different backyard setups. You can customise the swing by painting the tire in bright colours or adding soft padding inside for extra comfort.

Chalkboard Wall

Do your kids enjoy drawing on walls? Installing a chalkboard in the backyard will give them a dedicated space to express their creativity in a fun and mess-free way. It can even be used for learning activities like writing letters or practising numbers. Additionally, it’s a great opportunity to teach kids responsibility by showing them how to clean the board after use and store their chalk, pens, and erasers properly.

Splash Pad

Kids love to play and splash in the water, so adding a splash pad to your backyard is a great way to get them excited about going outside. It will become your kid’s favourite spot for cooling off and having fun on warm days. With no deep water involved, splash pads are also a safer option than pools for younger children, making them a perfect way to combine playtime with peace of mind.

Another great thing about splash pads is that they don’t take up much space, making them ideal for even smaller backyards. Many models are lightweight and portable, so you can easily move them around the yard or store them away when not in use.

Sandbox

With a sandbox in the backyard, your kids will be able to build, scoop and shape the sand into anything they imagine, from castles and roads to pretend cooking and treasure hunts. This type of play helps develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and problem-solving abilities. It also promotes independent and cooperative play as children can enjoy the sandpit on their own or with siblings.

It is another idea that doesn’t take up too much space and can be placed in any corner of the backyard.

Outdoor Movie Theatre

Watching a movie under the stars can be a magical experience that your kids are sure to love. All you need to make this possible is a white sheet, a portable projector, some cosy blankets and cushions, and their favourite snacks. Not only is this a fun and memorable activity for children, but it’s also a wonderful opportunity for the whole family to relax and spend time together.

As you can see, there are plenty of ways to make your backyard a more fun and engaging space for your kids. Whether you have a small outdoor space or a large one, with a little effort and creativity, it can become your family’s favourite destination, full of laughter and unforgettable memories.
