Carlos López Estrada to Launch Indie Institute Filmmaking Intensive

Carlos López Estrada, who earned an Oscar nomination for directing Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon animated feature, is set to launch Indie Institute, an accelerated indie filmmaking program.

The subscription-based three-month virtual filmmaking intensive will be run under López Estrada’s filmmaker-run banner Antigravity Academy.

“We believe in the power of independent filmmaking and have built our mission around bringing access and resources to as many emerging filmmakers as possible. Real miracles happen when storytellers are given unconditional creative support and our Indie Institute represents our largest effort to bring that mission to our extraordinary community,” López Estrada said in a statement on Thursday.

The Indie Institute (launching March 22) will cost $35 per month, or a $99 up-front payment, and will offer mentorship and instruction in indie filmmaking from script development to a movie’s release in a fast-changing industry landscape, according to the Antigravity Academy.

The director’s production company was launched in 2018 to develop and produce underrepresented stories and to incubate projects for first- and second-time filmmakers. Indie Institute aims to support emerging filmmakers looking to break into the indie film industry with traditional film education and practical insights from working filmmakers and industry professionals.

The program will offer weekly classes led by López Estrada and Antigravity’s head of development Holly Stanton, alongside case studies involving top indie filmmakers and industry experts. The launch of Indie Institute also follows López Estrada completing production on his next feature, DED, which stars Camila Mendez and Eugenio Derbez, and Antigravity entering the third year of its flagship screenwriters camp and the second year of its short film studio.

Antigravity is also in pre-production on director Alexandra Qin’s feature Thirstygirl. That follows director Sean Wang’s Didi bowing at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it earned an audience award, before a release by Focus Features.

Antigravity’s film, documentary and TV slate also includes the comedy series Smugglers, a collaboration with This American Life and showrunner Joanna Calo (The Bear). The production banner in 2024 also presented the multimedia film For Mexico For All Time at the Sphere in Las Vegas as part of the Noche UFC sporting event.

López Estrada is repped by CAA.
