My eldest son, Oliver, 15, had an hour long driving lesson earlier today- his first time behind the wheel- thanks to Young Driver who offer 9 -17+ kids a unique opportunity to gain hands-on driving experience in a safe and controlled environment whilst having some serious fun.
Oliver relished every moment driving, and his instructor Andi said he was amazed at what a proficient driver he was and in such a short time.
He drove up to 40 miles per hour, reverse parked and reached driving milestones like reversing around cones in a perfect squiggle, Andi said often takes 6 lessons.
I was so impressed with how competent he was. It made me think of the first time he rode a horse and took to it naturally, without fear and with an inner strength I certainly didn’t possess as a child. Oliver seems to have that first child syndrome where he’s incredibly mature for his age, and pretty proficient in most things he tries, effortlessly so. He’s a cerebral, creative and emotionally mature chap who never ceases to amaze me.
The driving took place at Leeds Church Fenton, Leeds East Airport with a huge track Oliver could drive around in a cool Suzuki Swift whilst planes and helicopters spun high above us. The atmosphere is utterly cinematic, you feel like you’re in a movie.
Oliver was stunned by how much he learnt in just 1 hour. You can book 30 minute sessions but the brand’s bestsellers are the 60 minute lessons allowing you to find your groove, confidence and actively learn as you go.
You can purchase bundles as a more cost effective option and there are tons of options available from driving classic cars to off road adventures; driving a fire engine and even hosting a party!

“I thoroughly enjoyed the lesson, Andi was such a kind and informative instructor who taught me so much in a short amount of time. The location and views were incredible which added to the magic of driving around the track. I can’t wait to return, if I was allowed to, I would have like to drive home, ha’!
We highly recommend Young Driver as a Christmas present or just because! Get your kids relaxed and experienced behind the wheel so when it comes to driving lessons and passing their test, they’ll take far less time and a lot less of your money!
There are 70 venues in the UK and you don’t have to be a child, anyone over 9 (with lessons for 4 +-9 available in miniature racing cars) are welcome. Another instructor mentioned a 90 year old man misses driving on the roads and often books lessons with them!
