Ok, aside from babies, we love helping people put together the perfect packing list! In today’s article, we’re going to share with you some of our favorite and possibly most surprising tips for putting together the perfect diaper bag that will help you and your baby get into and out of just about any situation that life throws at you. This is a really fun one to hear your experiences and tips as well. If there’s something we left off, please let us know in the comments and don’t forget to track us down on social as well.

The Diaper Bag Basics

Let’s start with the basics and go from there. These are the things that when packed in a bag can be the bare minimum to consider it a fully stocked diaper bag. Believe us, these are just the beginning!

      • Couldn’t have a diaper bag without them! We suggest keeping 5 in there as a good baseline and restock back up to 5 every time you get back home
      • Essential for cleaning up baby, especially for poops
      • Helps for when you are changing them in an impromptu setting like a park, or a plane, or in your car.
  • Extra clothes, outfits, for baby
    • You know that within 15 minutes of leaving the door, you’re going to need to change your baby’s outfit for some reason or another

The Upgraded Diaper Bag Basics Package

Now that your diaper bag has the basics in there, we also recommend a few of these handy items that will save your bacon from time to time.

  • Zip top sealable gallon sized bags
      • If you pack nothing else in your bag, we recommend adding about 4 or 5 of these. They come in handy in a variety of situations, especially if you have a really messy diaper and wipes to dispose of, but no trash can to be found. Or, if you are traveling on a plane, or bus, or subway and you need to change a diaper, and there is a trash available, but you can’t really use because it would smell terrible for the remainder of the journey, you can zip everything up in a tidy airtight bag and dispose of it later.
  • Plastic grocery bags, or small sized trash can liners/bags
      • In a similar vein to the above suggestion, having a few grocery bags on hand can help when you need to put your baby’s solid garments or even your own after getting spit up on. Also helps to have on hand if you or your baby get your clothes wet so you can keep them separate from the rest of the dry items in the bag.
      • We recommend always having extras on hand because they are so versatile. Keep at least 5 in your bag if there’s room.
      • This helps keep you and baby clean when no other options are available. We recommend two little bottles. One that is more for babies and one regular one for all ages.
    • Having a clean, backup binky will save your bacon, especially after you lose the first one or your baby decides to spit their first one out on the floor of a gas station bathroom. Being able to just grab a new one from your bag will save you and baby a lot of stress!

The More Niche-Applicable Diaper Bag Items

  • Travel sized first aid kit
      • You never know when you or your baby might get a little cut or scrape. Really helps to have on hand to keep little wounds clean and dry until you can get home
  • Extra shirt for mom or dad
      • You are very likely to get spit up on or otherwise dirty from a blowout or other unexpected yet seemingly inevitable mess involving your baby while on the go. Having an extra shirt on hand for you and your partner is some next-level preparedness that we’re here for! If there isn’t room in the diaper bag, definitely have a change of clothes for mom in the car.
    • Sure, you probably brought plenty of things to eat for your baby while you’re out, but you have to eat too and there isn’t always a convenient or reliable way to get your food as well. Pack a few non-perishible items like granola bars or protein bars in there to help keep you going
