Jimmy Kimmel Ended Our Friendship Over Politics

Bill Maher may have lost another chum.

A few years back, the “Club Random” host admitted aging shock jock Howard Stern no longer pals around with the comic due to the COVID-19 virus. Stern became a Howard Hughes-esque recluse during the pandemic, and he stopped socializing with his celebrity pals (like Maher) as a result.

Now, it’s Stern’s pal Jimmy Kimmel who may not break bread with Maher moving forward, but for a very different reason.

The podcaster invited rebel comedian Adam Carolla on “Club Random” this week. The two brought up Kimmel, a decades-long pal of Carolla and someone who helped the carpenter enter Hollywood.

Their politics couldn’t be more different. Kimmel is an unpaid propagandist for the Democrats, while Carolla leans to the Right but eschews party labels.

“Jimmy Kimmel … is very mad at me, and I know you’re close to him,” Maher said when the ABC late-night host’s name came up. Carolla and Kimmel worked together on “The Man Show” and “Crank Yankers,” and they maintain a close, off-screen friendship.

“I don’t think I did anything wrong. We can have disagreements,” Maher said about the chasm between he and Kimmel.

“I agree,” Carolla said softly. He’s often pressed on his friendship with the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host and always treats the subject with care.

“You and I don’t agree on everything … and yet, we’re cool,” Maher said of his guest. “This is the difference between the Right and the Left, and it bugs me so much. My tribe is supposed to be the Left, but these are the people who just can’t talk to you unless you’re exactly there. Whereas the Republicans, they always f***ing come to my show.”

“Club Random” routinely features right-leaning artists, including Kid Rock, Dave Rubin, David Mamet and, of course, Carolla. The conversations are lively and sometimes heated. The tone is genial, and the episodes wrap on good terms.

Need proof? Both Kid Rock and Mamet have appeared twice on the show. Would either return if they had a negative experience?

Maher noted that he swapped emails with Kimmel in the recent past, likely connected to comparisons some in the media make between Maher’s late-night brand and Kimmel’s ABC perch.

The latter is predictable and one-sided, while Maher will often critique his progressive friends while maintaining his left-leaning profile.

The issue, perhaps? Maher’s take on the current late-night landscape. It’s tough but fair.

“You could all exchange your monologues, all of you, and no one would know the difference in tone,” Maher said of Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers and “The Daily Show” host du jour.

Don’t count Maher in with that approach.

“I just don’t buy into the leftwing bulls***, and I never stop making fun of the rightwing bull *** at all.”

“If that’s not good enough for you, then I think you’re the a**hole,” Maher added, an indirect slam at Kimmel. “And I don’t think Jimmy is an a**hole … I think he’s a great guy.

“And it bugs me that because of what the latest thing was, we may never talk again,” Maher added.

“You guys should be thick as thieves and all on the same page,” Carolla said.

Sounds like that’s anything but the case.
