Introduction: Makkal Selvan Vijay Sethupathi returned to the Tamil screen after a while with VJS 50 titled ‘Maharaja.’ The versatile actor, who has gone places with his incredible talent and conviction, chose Nithilan Saminathan’s slow-burn thriller for his 50th film. He played the role of a barber who gives his all for his daughter.

Story: Maharaja (Vijay Sethuapthi) is a barber who lives with his wife and daughter. Suddenly a ghastly accident takes away his everything leaving behind his daughter and Lakshmi. He and his daughter grow up believing Lakshmi is their good luck charm and treat it like a family. As they live their quiet life in harmony, Lakshmi gets stolen after their house gets ransacked.

Performances: Needless to say, Vijay Sethupathi is brilliant as Maharaja, a father whose world is nothing but his daughter (Jothi) and his job. When he faces life’s most challenging situation, he brings out the best of his abilities as a helpless father, while seeking revenge.

Anurag Kashyap is a surprise package in the film and he portrayed a character that he never tried before. He brought an edge to the role with surprising shades. He is ruthless and at the same time is an endearing person who loves his daughter.

Mamta Mohandas as the Physical Education Teacher brings nothing remarkable and she barely has any dialogues. However, her presence on the screen is refreshing. Bharathiraja also has one or two scenes in the film in which he pours out his skills. On the other hand, actors Natraj, Munishkanth, Manikandan, Abhirami, Singampuli, and others have done their bit in the characters they played convincingly.

Analysis:

Maharaja movie’s entire setup is in tone that depicts the single and boring life of Maharaja, who has only one mission in life after that unfortunate night. The movie’s narration that goes back and forth is the biggest plus and it made a lot of difference to an otherwise routine predictable tale.

The movie also had some subtle comedy that didn’t go unnoticed. Some scenes made audiences clap in support and a few that have been rounded off without a pause.

Technical Aspects:

Director Nithilan Saminathan wrote a good screenplay but it could’ve been even better had he focused more on the climax and how all the twists are opened just at one point without giving the audience time to take it in. The film’s pre-climax is more riveting and thrilling than the climax confrontation.

B Ajaneesh Loknath’s background score (there are no songs in the film) complements the flow of the story but in a few key scenes, the music failed to match up to the emotion. Writing for the movie and the story along with precise editing skills of Philomin Raj are heart for Maharaja.

What’s Good:

Vijay Sethupathi
Anurag Kashyap
Screenplay
Performances

What’s Not So Good:
Noteworthy Music
Redundant scenes

Verdict: Maharaja movie makes for a good watch with terrific performances and is a unique revenge tale. Despite having a few drawbacks, Vijay Sethupathi’s 50th film still cuts.
