Parents are constantly in a state of either/or. Either they take care of their own needs or their children’s. Guess who wins out on that equation? Most moms don’t intentionally press pause on their lives the moment they have children. It’s the sort of thing that can happen naturally and by way of exhaustion.

Endless sports games, constant doctor appointments, class snacks that are never needed anytime other than tomorrow morning, an endless barrage of birthday parties.

And, well, you see where we’re going with this. Once you start a family, it’s very easy for everything else to get put to the side.

But busy moms don’t need to forfeit a career in business. There are ways you can have it all. In this article, we take a sweeping look at how parents can balance family responsibilities with career goals.

Pursuing Education

Needless to say, many business-related careers exist behind a sort of paper wall. This is particularly true for advanced positions. The more competitive the job, the more it helps to have a stacked set of credentials.

Getting an MBA is easily one of the best ways to increase your earning potential and accelerate your career. This often sounds unachievable, and particularly so to someone who spends a considerable portion of their day changing diapers.

The reality is that while difficult, getting a Master’s of Business Administration degree can be done in a flexible format that meets your unique needs as a busy parent.

The advent of online learning has created lots of opportunities for people who otherwise might not have had them.

Now you can choose from universities all over the world without ever leaving your home. You can select accredited programs based on factors like price, format, and even professors that you’re interested in working with.

You can then work on it in whatever timeline feels appropriate to you. If it takes five years, well, that’s just how long it takes.

Online learning is particularly advantageous for busy parents because it often consists of prerecorded lectures that you can view and engage with on your own timeline.

In this way, if you need to wait until after the kids go to bed before starting your schoolwork, well, that’s just what you’ll do. The degree is just as valid as any other MBA, opens just as many doors, and will also be the most achievable option for people who feel tied to a young child. It’s also worth noting that MBAs can be very specific to focus on accounting or even entrepreneurship.

Whatever your goal, there’s a degree completable online that’s worthy of your consideration.

Look for Opportunities That Fit Your Circumstances

People have a tendency of assuming that doors are closed without ever really going out and looking. You might think, well, I’m only available for about 20 hours a week, and even then, not consistently. There’s no way I could get a rewarding corporate career.

Do you know that for sure? Did you really go out and see what kind of opportunities are available? One thing: lots of businesses are still hiring remote.

The number has diminished a little bit over the years, with many offices switching to a hybrid environment, but if that doesn’t suit your lifestyle, the simplest option is to not even consider those jobs. The beautiful thing about remote work is that you’re not limited to opportunities that are immediately near you.

This means that there are literally thousands, probably tens of thousands of jobs across the world that you can be applying for, and there are new ones added every day. We’re talking about not only working from home, but in many cases, working when it suits you.

Increasingly, this allows people the freedom and flexibility to work how and when they want as long as they’re meeting deadlines and completing responsibilities outlined by the job description.

There will always be meetings and so on that do require your presence at fixed times, but outside that, it’s increasingly common for businesses to say, work how and when you want. Just make sure you’re getting everything done.

This is beneficial for just about anyone, but particularly enticing for busy parents who would otherwise feel as though a demanding corporate career was unattainable for them.

Consider Starting Your Own Business

If traditional employment is more flexible than ever, the same goes doubly true of self-employment. There are virtually unlimited ways to make money on the strength of your own ingenuity and wit.

Business ownership is not easy, but that’s not the same thing as saying it’s impossible. There are, thanks to the digital marketplace, more ways than ever to start your own business without a large upfront investment.

There are obvious options: setting up a freelance practice, dabbling in e-commerce through the accessible door of drop shipping.

There are also less obvious but very surprisingly rewarding opportunities available to those who are willing to pursue them.

For example, an increasingly high number of aspiring business owners are discovering the rewards of home service businesses: landscaping, lawn care, maid and janitorial services. Businesses that are not exactly exciting, but profitable, straightforward, and predictable.

It can feel a little crazy. Going back to school, applying for jobs, and starting your own business. For a busy parent, these sound like wild fantasies. That’s not the reality. These are difficult things to accomplish, sure, but people do each one of them every day, and always in the same tried and true method: one step at a time.

If you’re a mom who wants a career, don’t close doors without fully examining them first. There are so many different ways to earn a living now, and many of them won’t cost you time with your family.
