Running a household isn’t easy – but you don’t need telling that. Even one child can be more than a handful, particularly when you’re juggling their school routine, extracurricular hobbies, friend dates, and general health and well-being with that of your own. There’s barely time to breathe – and then it’s half-term.
Not every half-term needs to be an adventure, granted. Still, between your children’s exams and your own parental stress, maybe last-minute holidays aren’t such a bad idea after all. How, then, can you reconcile your own busy schedule with the planning of a last-minute, stress-relieving family holiday for the ages?
Be Flexible with Dates and Destinations
First, stop kicking yourself for not having planned this ages ago. In fact, sometimes, the last-minute nature of your prep makes for much better prospects; in other words, the flexibility gives you an edge. With less time till take off, you should be able to find some great deals for both flights and accommodation.
This flexibility also means you can think outside the box with respect to the itinerary of your trip. Not only could it be cheaper for you to spread your holiday across a few places, but you’ll also get a great deal more variety from your trip in the process.
Pack Smart and Light
Last-minute holidays can leave you with very little time to prepare – especially if your favourable accommodation deals come at the expense of three days’ notice. This means you may have next to no time to pack. Luckily, this needn’t be the challenge it sounds; aim to pack light, and keep things to a minimum.
This means packing a couple changes of clothes as opposed to a full wardrobe’s worth, and thinking more about the basic essentials than the like-to-haves. If you’re going somewhere sunny, take some travel-sized sunscreen – and try to use it all! After all, it’ll only go off before you find the time to holiday again…
Essential Pre-Travel Checks
Whatever you end up doing and wherever you end up going, you’ll kick yourself if you don’t put 15 minutes aside to check the essentials. Yes, suncream is important, especially for yours and your little ones’ skin, but things like passports and travel insurance are also crucial.
The first thing you should do before hunting for deals is hunt for your family’s passports, and check they’re still in date – else, you’ll be stuck staycationing for your impromptu getaway… Travel insurance may not seem like a necessity at times, but you’ll quickly regret that when the flight leaves without you, or worse, someone becomes ill abroad. Buy it as soon as you book, and check it covers cancellation fees too!
