Sports Injury Turned Into Sciatica

I’m writing this to you with my right leg elevated onto a foot stool in a considerable amount of pain. It’s been a terrible week with a sports injury from swimming too vigorously (100 laps in half an hour-I wouldn’t recommend it) which resulted in slow building sciatica and pain unmatched even to labour pain. Nerve pain is the WORST pain imaginable. The only way I can describe mine is as if someone is crunching then setting my bones alight.

I had to cancel everything in my diary last week from visiting schools for World Book Day to a European film premiere for Michelle Pfeiffer’s new movie The Madison and yesterday, Disney on Ice. I could cry. If there were any tears left after a week of wailing. A pain that is relentless makes you feel not only immobile but depressed.

Two physio sessions later and a lot of medication spanning Lansoprazole to protect my stomach before two doses of Naproxen a day to help reduce inflammation and Amitriptyline to block the pain and help me sleep, I feel like a rag doll slowly being stitched back together and the road to recovery has begun.

I’m not a doctor so please see yours if you are struggling with anything similar. A physio can diagnose you firstly then they can help with massage and exercises to support your recovery. In the meanwhile, rest, eat well, take the meds (I tried to swerve them at first until the physical pain outweighed my health anxiety fears) and feel better. It hurts to stand for even a few minutes so I’m watching funny movies whilst resting. Rest is something we parents find hard so I’m taking this as instruction from the universe to chill out. It’s been brilliant to see how prolific my kids can be in the kitchen when Mama is unwell and unable to help as much. Another lesson to stop micromanaging everyone and ask for more help.

It’s hurt me emotionally to ask for extensions with work, to have to rearrange school visits and SLOW DOWN but I’m listening to my body, resting and napping where possible, and trying not to be too hard on myself. I miss being active, I really do but one thing’s for sure, I’ll never take a short walk for granted again! Photo above was taken by my husband during a stroll in the stunning grounds of Castle Howard before my injury!
