Subedaar On Prime Video: Mona Singh Plays Babli Didi In Sand Mafia Crime Drama- All About Her Role

Mona Singh steps into new territory in Prime Video’s Subedaar, playing jailed sand mafia leader Babli Didi. The action-drama, directed by Suresh Triveni and led by Anil Kapoor, premieres on 5 March. The series streams in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu across India and in over 240 countries and territories.

Babli Didi runs several illegal sand-mining ghats while staying behind bars, and constantly locks horns with Subedaar Arjun Maurya, played by Anil Kapoor. The character is powerful, erratic and grounded in heartland life, offering viewers a side of Mona Singh that audiences have not seen earlier.

Subedaar is produced by Vikram Malhotra, Anil Kapoor and Suresh Triveni under Opening Image Films, with Anil Kapoor Film & Communication Network (AKFCN) as partner. The script is written by Suresh Triveni and Prajwal Chandrashekar. The ensemble includes Radhikka Madan, Saurabh Shukla, Aditya Rawal, Faisal Malik, Mona Singh and Khushboo Sundar in key roles.

Mona Singh Subedaar journey into Babli Didi

Sharing how Babli Didi landed on the table, Mona Singh recalled a call from Suresh Triveni, described as a close friend. Triveni offered a part that was unlike anything in Mona Singh’s earlier work and narrated the script in detail, which left Mona Singh both shocked and curious about the challenge.

Mona Singh shared, “Mujhe Suresh (Triveni) ka phone aaya (Suresh Triveni called me), he is a dear friend. And he told me, Mona, I’m offering you a role, something that you have never done before. He narrated the script to me and told me about my character, and I was like, ‘Arey baap re! Yeh kya de diya mujhe?’ (OMG, what have you given me?). I have never done this before.”

Once on set, Mona Singh found the collaboration with Suresh Triveni both relaxed and engaging. Mona Singh said, “I think that’s the best part working with Suresh, and it’s our first collaboration,” before describing Babli Didi as a figure packed with quirks and contradictions that drew Mona Singh towards the role.

Mona Singh added, “She is full of surprises and is a little whimsical. She is very unpredictable and she is unapologetically flawed. That’s what I love about the character.”

The part demanded both physical energy and detailed research, particularly with language and attitude. Mona Singh explained the work involved in playing a jailed gang leader who controls the entire sand mafia network, while constantly unsettling Subedaar Arjun Maurya through sharp exchanges and intense confrontations across the narrative.

Mona Singh said, “Ek heartland ka dialect bhi pakadna hai aur aap gundi didi bhi bani hui ho. Pura sand mafia aap chala rahi hai. (You have to get the heartland dialect right, and you’re also playing a goon. You’re running the entire sand mafia). Aur meine Subedaar Ji ko dukhi kar rakha hai puri picture me. Bohot action ho rahe hai didi ke wajah se. (And I’ve troubled Subedaar ji throughout the film. There’s a lot of action happening because of Didi). So it was challenging. Ofcourse challenge har actor ko pasand aata hai aur mujhe sabse zyada pasand aata hai. (Of course, every actor likes a challenge, and I like it the most). To do things which challenge me, surprise me, which give me some sleepless nights, toh mene yeh sab mehsoos kiya yeh play karte waqt aur bohot maze kiye. (I felt all of that while playing this role, and I had a lot of fun).”

For viewers, Subedaar offers a crime drama set around the sand trade, anchored by Anil Kapoor’s Subedaar Arjun Maurya and balanced by Mona Singh’s volatile Babli Didi. With a strong supporting cast and a story steeped in heartland conflicts, the series aims to deliver an intense experience when it starts streaming on 5 March.
