Surviving Summer with the Kids (with mindfulness and maybe some ice-cream)

Posted on

Keep your cool with meditation

Surviving Summer with the Kids – summer holidays can feel long – especially when routines go out the window.

You love your kids, but let’s be honest… it can sometimes feel intense! There’s pressure to keep them entertained 24/7, and it’s easy to let your own self-care, meditation practice slide.

But to be honest, this is where your mindfulness practice becomes a lifeline. Even 5–10 minutes a day can help you stay grounded, calm and more present – with yourself and with your kids.

Don’t worry if they don’t join in. Let them see you practising. If they do want to take part – great. If not, you’re still setting a powerful example.

Everyday Mindfulness Ideas (for you & them)

To help you approach this more creatively, here are a few suggestion to get you started.

  • Breathe on the go – in the car, while cooking, even in the loo! Let your out-breath be your anchor as it’s known to help your nervous system reset (eg move out of stress).

  • Use the senses – notice what you can see, hear, feel, taste, or smell when walking, swimming, or eating (especially if it’s ice-cream!)

  • Be honest with yourself –  acknowledge you might be feeling, hot, bothered or grumpy. It’s okay.  When you accept these feelings they often lose their sting.
  • Connect to the best healer – nature – trees, grass, sand… being outside helps us feel calmer and more grounded just by being there.

  • Move mindfully – yoga, cartwheels, skipping… anything can be a meditation if you’re present.  Your kids have much to teach you about this.  Includes giggles and laughing too – releases endorphins into the bloodstream and that reduces stress that’s built up.

  • Get creative – colour a mandala, guide them into a fun, safe place in their imaginations…or let your child guide you in a “story meditation”.

  • Teen ‘trouble’ – if your teens are of the age where they are with you under resistance, then why not introduce them to meditations online – we have a Meditation Club full of ideas that can inspire them to try privately and in their own space/time. (And the great thing is there are meditations on there for you too and your smaller kids!)

Real Stories, Real Results

This isn’t about doing it perfectly. It’s about finding little mindful moments in the chaos. Keep going with your own practice – the benefits will ripple out, trust me!

“Here’s my 5-year-old meditating in the pool after a sibling squabble. He often joins us for 6am meditation too. Namaste.”

Curious but don’t know where to begin?

Start by reading our first book, Connected Kids which is ideal if you are familiar with meditation.  If not, then try the Calm Kids book which is perfect for beginners.  Or if you want to encourage their reading and empower them with mindful skills – try our Children’s Fiction – ‘Robbie and Jess’ for 7 to 11 year olds.

These books will give you insights into what we do and why it works time and time again.
