We’re already massive fans of bangin’ burger chain, Byron, but returning recently to their York city centre branch, with my professional hat on, meant snapping away over lunch (which means frustratingly having to pause before eating) to bring you this honest review. Read on, friends!
It will be no suprise to you that Byron York is a seriously good burger joint boasting mind-blowing flavour combos, with their patties, vegan burgers, home slaw, fries, and BBQ and honey chicken wings respectively, we all gobbled up with glee and are still talking about weeks later!
Nothing is too much trouble at Byron in York, and our family of five ordered plant-based, low carb and child-friendly options between us, proving there’s ample choice for all there, whatever your preferences or dietary requirements might be.
There’s nowhere quite like Byron when it comes to burgers, if you ask me, they’re truly the best.
You close your eyes, dive in and instantly feel transported to the US. Let’s say Conneticut specifically, shall we, as that’s usually cited as where the burger was first invented. Magic.
Our meal was the perfect marriage of premium quality handmade burgers, and marinated chicken wings (including vegan options), delivering both taste and texture, thanks to their crunchy and gooey toppings of crispy bacon, melted cheese and caramelised fried onions coupled with tangy, creamy bespoke sauces (they need to start selling their ranch sauce) making this meal a 10/10.
Their moorish honey and BBQ marinated wings were so addictive, we had to order extra!
Attentive, knowledgable and welcoming staff aka the managerial dream team Phil and Jason (if they were teachers, they’d be deemed outstanding by Ofsted as they really set the bar on service) seriously make every meal a pleasure. We’ve been served by them both on previous paid visits and can attest to their genuine warmth and passion for Byron.
When it came to my lunch, I relished my buttermilk chicken salad (they kindly removed the bun for me so I could stick to my low carb plan) with crispy fried onions and Peter had a vegan Beyond Meat burger with all the trimmings. The portions are huge and hearty, making the food great value for money without compromising on quality or taste.
Eating at Byron really is the highlight of our trips to York, sandwiched in between cultural and historical museum visits, a spot of shopping, and a riverside walk with a playground stop, of course.
Before we headed to the playground though, the kids HAD to order their fave dessert.
Byron’s chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream always blows their minds, none of whom are usually big sweet eaters either which really tells you something. You also order plant-based vanilla ice cream if you prefer too.
Just look at that beauty!
Florence lapped up her treat of a diet coke floater with ice cream you get to pour yourself and watch froth, and her small children’s portion of brownie and ice cream was the perfect size to avoid a major sugar crash and meltdown.
Prior to that, it was creamy macaroni cheese with fries and chopped cucumber for her whilst the boys dived into smashed burgers with ranch sauce and melted cheese they devoured along with their must-have sweet potato fries.
Just writing this review and reliving the meal is making me want to rush right back there.
The restaurant is a warm and stylish joint with its chic industrial style decor (the perfect place for families) and is awash with natural light, particularly in its conservatory-style dining area at the back where we were seated, with plenty of space between tables making families and larger parties feel extra comfortable.
After the perfect meal, we headed to the tranquil, picture-perfect Rowntree Park by the river for a long walk under the Weeping willows, in the late afternoon sun with some fun on the swings and monkey bars before catching the train back to Harrogate. We’ve decided to take trains more often to relieve us from traffic and parking stress and help the environment more!
What a fab time was had by all.
If Carlsberg (or Brooklyn Brewery) made Sundays hey!
We were gifted lunch but as usual, this is an honest review.
