Traveling with a newborn is quite the proposition. It takes the already Herculean task of caring for a newborn child in the comfort of your own home and adds the stresses and challenges of travel on top. However, as we start this busy summer travel season, many parents of newborns may not have much of a choice. If you’re a parent who may need some advice for traveling with your newborn this summer, then you’re in the right place! If you have any stories of your own about globetrotting with your bundle of joy and how you managed to survive, please share with the rest of the class in the comments below or on social media!
Planning Your Trip
If you find yourself needing (or just really wanting) to travel with your young baby this summer, then one of the most important things you can do to ensure your child’s safety and your sanity throughout the trip is to plan every detail meticulously. Here are some summer-specific things you should be thinking of and planning for as the final shape of your trip comes together:
-
-
- Make sure you are always monitoring your baby’s temperature and comfort level as it relates to the hot weather. Babies have a harder time regulating their body temperatures, so you have to get ahead of things by reducing their exposure to hot outside temperatures as much as possible.
-
-
-
- Be aware that they may require extra feedings due to hydration needs. Pack extra formula or pre-pump breast milk to have at the ready. Unexpected delays happen often.
-
-
- Limit their sun exposure
- Bring shaded carriers or covered strollers or even a sun umbrella can help. Your baby should be out of direct sunlight as much as possible.
- For babies six months or older, you can use certain sunscreens that are designed specifically for babies
- Crowds and exposure to germs/disease
- Potential for over-stimulation or exposure to loud environmental noises or large crowds
- Every baby is different. If they haven’t been exposed to a large crowd or busy travel terminal, then you may want to take them on a dry run at a local mall or shopping center that packs a crowd to see how they react to the new and potentially overwhelming stimuli
Packing Essentials Checklist
The next step is actually packing for your journey. Aside from all of the regular items and concerns that come along with summer travel, you will need to make extra room for things that will help you and your little one beat the heat. Here’s what we recommend:
- Diapering: travel-sized packs of diapers, changing pad (or two), gallon sized sealable plastic storage bags or small grocery sacks for when you need to change a diaper in a shared space or for when a garbage can is not immediately available. You’ll thank us later.
- Feeding: formula prep, bottles, breast milk storage, nursing cover, cold storage for pumped milk or other temperature sensitive foodstuffs for baby
- Sleeping: portable bassinet, swaddle, white noise app
- Clothing: layering for temperature shifts, backups for accidents
- Emergency items: first aid kit, infant meds, backup pacifiers
