The National Science and Media Museum in Bradford

Posted on

The National Science and Media Museum in Bradford truly holds a special place in my heart. It cemented my passion for the arts from an early age and having the chance to experience to become a newsreader at a young age on visits there, was definitely one of the catalysts which led me to a broadcasting and filmmaking career.

Access to museums are gateways to learning, further education and following your dreams.

Now that we live in Harrogate, Bradford is only a 40 minute drive away so visiting with my own family is not only easy but an absolute pleasure. With new exhibitions running all the time and the epic IMAX cinema on site, amongst other theatres, there is so much to do and see there, we must return again and soon.

Watching Superhuman in the IMAX gave us 3D insight into the working body and mind (literally as we travel into the body on several occasions) and our capacity for resilience, healing and longevity.

I was moved to tears several times throughout as we unflinchingly followed a multi-protagonist narrative of several people who beat the odds to survive and thrive despite medical complications, life-changing accidents and frightening disease. You also hear personal stories of scientists, medics, and researchers and what drives them forward in their pursuit to improve their lives and the lives of others.

Although it was a little too complex for my 3 year old, my sons, 12, and 15, were captivated, expressing that the film felt like a dynamic biology lesson which fully immerses you into the lives of those forced to push themselves mentally and physically.

Florence loved playing video games with her Dad, whilst we enjoyed the documentary, experiencing a taste of 90s games both my husband and I enjoyed as kids!

Next up was a visit to the Wonderlab, a permanent feature with 20 mind-bending science experiments you can take part in. This is immersive, engaging and interactive learning as you play.

The most effective way to learn is by having fun.

From getting up close to the surface of the sun to creating your own special effects and learning how sound and light work, we are more able to understand the world around us and how the technology we use today, came into existence and will continue to evolve thanks to education and innovation.

The permanent gallery Sound and Vision charts the advent of tech from the birth of photography and moving image to the modern day iPhone, exposing you to historical, social and technological change over time.

Mind blowing!

There are lots of summer activities on currently where children can learn to make animation, take part in family trails through the exhbitions and ‘travel’ to outer space.

What an incredibly creative and educational space that undoubtedly impacts visitors and lasts a lifetime for those who visit, influencing and inspiring future careers and generations to come.

We were gifted press tickets but as always, my words are honest.
